ACANTHIZA ORNITHOLOGY AUSTRALIA

About Us

Acanthiza Ornithology Australia provide wildlife tourism services, primarily designing bespoke tours for visitors (and locals!) who want a guided tour that fits around their holiday targets and itinerary.  While our focus is obviously bird life we are happy to provide anything from intensive days of birding from dusk till dawn (and beyond!) or more leisurely explorations of destinations and habitats with informative interpretation of landscape, flora and fauna. Just use the contact form to give us some ideas to get started with some plans and we will take it from there and work with you to provide the ideal itinerary.

We can also provide engaging and informative educational talks to fit in with teachers lesson plans in wildlife or the environment, delivered either in the classroom or, by arrangement, in a suitable external location.

Finally if you need ornithological surveys (desktop and field) and associated reporting, please send us a brief or contact us to discuss your requirements.

Who We Are

Mike, Our Principal and lead guide is a 43 year old ornithologist based with his family near the Victorian State Capital of Melbourne, conveniently situated for the city centre and the international and domestic airport. Mike is originally from the UK and moved to Australia 10 years ago. He has decades of ornithology experience starting with the Young Ornithologist Club in the 1970s! In the 1990s Mike spent several assignments with the Royal Society for the Protection of Bird's  voluntary wardening scheme throughout the UK, assisted with British Trust for Ornithology national surveys and became involved in habitat conservation in the English Midlands, where he recorded the first Dartford Warbler to be found in Worcestershire for 100-years.
Moving to Australia Mike started volunteering with Birds Australia (now BirdLife Australia) before completing a Master of Environmental Management and Graduate Diploma in Ornithology. He has volunteered as a bird bander on research projects with forest birds and shorebirds and undertaken an extended research trip to the NSW north western deserts.
He has birded throughout his home state of Victoria, as well as New South Wales' arid & semi-arid north and west, Tasmania, the South Australian Mallee, tropical Far-north Queensland and Tablelands, in Western Australia's unique south-west and in the Southern Ocean.

Sophie worked for many years as a wildlife ranger in the UK, and now works as a science educator and museum and art gallery guide. She has a degree in Environmental Science and many years experience designing and delivering interpretive material and engaging educational programs.
